Kamakhya Shaktipeeth is considered one of the most eminent Shaktipeeth of of Mata Sati. Kamakhya Shaktipeeth is situated in Kamakhya on Nilanchal hill in Kamgiri area. This comes in Guwahati district of Assam. There is popular belief related to the formation of the Shaktipeeths.
Kamakhya is an important Tantric goddess that evolved in the Himalayan hills. She is closely identified with Kali and Maha Tripura Sundari. According to the Tantric texts (Kalikapurana Stotra, Yoginitantram) that are the basis for her worship at the Kamakhya temple, a 16th century temple in the Kamrup district of Assam. The earlier manifest of the goddess sanctified at the Garo hills is destroyed, although the Vatsayanapriests are said to have carried away the manifest of the goddess to the Hindu kingdom in Kashmir and later sanctified in a remote hill forest in Himachal. Her name means “renowned goddess of desire,” and she resides at the present rebuilt Kamakhya temple replacing the lost manifest now in the form of a stone yoni (female generative organ) symbolic of the goddess in 1645 C. The temple is primary amongst the 51 Shakti Peethasrelated to the myth of Sati, and remains one of the most important Shakta temples and Hindu pilgrimage sites in the world.
Kamakhya is pictured as a young goddess, 16 years old, with twelve arms and six heads of varying colors, representing a powerful goddess who is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. She is ornately dressed, typically wearing a red sari, opulent jewelry and red flowers such as hibiscus.
She holds in each of ten hands a lotus, trident, sword, bell, discus, bow, arrows, club or scepter, goad, and shield. Her remaining two hands hold a bowl, which is made either of gold or a skull.
She is seated upon a lotus, which emerges from the navel of the corpse of Shiva, who in turn lies atop a lion.
To each side of her sit Brahma and Vishnu, who are each seated upon a lotus, as well.
Kamakhya is often synonymous with Shakta Tantra. Tantric worship of Kamakhya is very secretive in nature. Tantric texts such as the 10th century Kalikapurana and 15th century Yogini tantrasuggest that worship of this goddess is radically non-dual in nature and of the vamachara, or “left-hand path”, which includes the use of forbidden substances (such as panchamakara) and practices designed to transcend desire and personal ego. Features of Tantric worship may include the drawing of a yantra with sindoor and repeating the bija mantra associated with her. However, common worship of this goddess is fairly orthodox in nature. The Kalikapurana states that all worship is acceptable to the goddess, and that one should worship her according to one’s own customs. Worship of Kamakhya grants moksha, or ultimate spiritual liberation.
Darshan at this temple is performed not by sight as in most temples, but by touch. There is no murti, but rather a large cleft in the bedrock moistened by water flowing upward from an underground spring, generally covered by cloths and ornate chunris, flowers, and red sindoor powder. Devotees and pilgrims offer items for worship directly to the goddess, then touch her and drink water from the spring. They are then given a tilak and prasad by the attending priest.
After completing darshan, devotees light lamps and incense outside the temple. Like other temples, worship is not considered complete until the temple is circumambulated clockwise.
The Kamakhya temple itself is one of the most important Shakta pilgrimage sites in the world, attracting millions of visitors each year, particularly for Ambubachi Mela in June/July, which celebrates the Earth’s menstruation and draws upwards of 100,000 pilgrims per day during the 4-day festival.
Shaktipeeth Establishment Story
Once king Daksha organised a Yajna and invited all the Gods in that but did not invited Lord Shiva.When Devi Sati came to know that her father is organising a Yajna she asked Lord Shiva to permit her to attend the Yajna. Lord Shiva tried to explain her that going anywhere without invitation brings dishonor but on much insistence of Mata Sati he permitted her to go.
King Daksha was perplexed to see Mata Sati come uninvited and insulted her and her husband. Devi Sati felt her husbands insult intolerable and jumped and killed herself in the Yajna pyre.
When this news came to Lord Shiva, he came and destroyed the Yajna, took out the body of Mata from the fire, kept it on his shoulders and started roaming in all around the universe. The partly burned body of Mata Sati started falling on the grounds and all the places where it fell became the Shaktipeeths.
The vaginal part of Mata Sati fell at this place so this part of Mata Sati is worshipped at this place. This is why taking photos inside the temple is strictly prohibited.
In addition, Devi remains in Rajaswala position when Ambuvachi Yoga forms once in a year for three days. During this period of three days the doors automatically closes and opens on fourth day. After his a special puja is performed and then the Mata can be viewed and worshipped.
The three days when the doors of Mata Kamakhya temple remains closed is of great importance for the scholars of divine and Mantra powers. This place is also called the Kaumari Tirth(pilgrimage) of this world. During these three days the Tantric meditators from all over the world come here and try to gain the best level of Tantric powers.
Here Mata Sati is called Kamakhya and Bhairav is called Umanand.
kamakhya Temple Importance
The place where Kamakhya temple is situated is also called Kamrup. In the 51 Shaktipeeths, Kamakhya Shakipeeth is also called Mahapeeth. There is a cave in this temple the way to which is very rocky and is called Narkasur Path. There is grand idol of Mata in the middle portion of the temple. There is also a Kund(pond) at this place which is called Saubhagya Kund.
The people believes that offering red stole or cloth fulfills all the wishes of the devotee.
Place to Learn Tantric and Hidden Powers
Along side being the Devi Shaktipeeth Kamakhya is also a place to learn Tantric and hidden powers. During the Rajaswala period of Mata, powerful Tantrics, Aghoris, Hath Yogis and Naga Babas gather here in large. After the end of Rajaswala a spesial puja of Mata is performed. During this Mahakumbh the sages starts thronging this place in large from a week ago.
For Tantric powers, some of these these sages and Tantrics stand in the water, some sit in the water and some stand on one leg and perform meditation.
