Jai Jwala Maa The best known Jwala Ji shrine is located in the lower Himalayas in Jawalamukhi town of the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh state ofIndia, about 55 kilometers from the larger town of Dharamsala. The temple style is typical of Jwala Ji shrines, four cornered, with a small dome on the top and a square central pit of hollowed stone inside where the main flame burns endlessly.An annual fair is held in the environs of the temple every July/August.

The temple had an associated library of ancient Hindu texts, many of which were translated from Sanskrit into Persian at the orders of Firuz Shah Tughlaq when the Delhi Sultanate overran the Kangra area. According to the legend, when Sati’s body was divided into 51 parts, HER tongue fell here. The flames/ Jyotis are the representation of the same.


The tongue of Mata Sati fell in Kangada district of Himachal Pradesh. The temple is 31 km from Kangada Ghati and takes around 2 hours to reach there. This place is called Jwala Ji Sthan. Here Shakti is called Siddhida(Ambika) and Bhairav is called Unmatt.

In this Shaktipeeth any idol or Pindi of Mata is not worshipped. Here the devotees worship the flame coming out of the earth. The source of this flame is still unknown to the scientists as well.

Nine flames come out of the earth and the temple has been built upon these flames.The people worship and offer sacraments to these flames. According to a legend, the Britishers, during their reign, tried their best to utilise the energy coming out of the earth from this place but all in vain and finally they announced this flame comes out due to miracle and not naturally.

Jwalamukhi Shakti Peeth and Akbar Story

When Akbar came to know about this flame then he ordered to put off the flame any how but even after much efforts he was not successful in it. Finally he realised its magical power and bowed his head in-front of it. He also donated an umbrella made up of 50 kg. There is a Gorakh Dibbi nearby the temple where the people believe Guru Gorakhnath came and showed his powers. There is also a pond near this temple whose water seems to be boiling but is cold when touched.

This temple comes within the 51 Shakti Peeths of Mata Sati. Jwalamukhi temple is also called Jota Wali and Nagarkot temple. The credit of searching Jwala Mata temple goes to the Pandavas.

The initial construction of this temple was done by king Bhumichand and later on the construction was completed by king Ranjit Singh and Sansarchand. The nine flames inside the temple are known by the name of Maha Kali, Annapurna, Chandi, Hinglaj, Vindhyawasini Devi, Maha Lakshami, Mata Saraswati, Ambika and Anji Devi.

Shakti Peeth Pilgrim Importance

Worshipping Mata during the Navratras are considered beneficial and a large number of devotees gather at this place during this time. A grand fair is organised during this period. Special Pujas are organised along with chanting Mantras, performing Devi Path and Havana. People from all over the India throng this place during the Navratris. Some devotees also bring a flag of red colour for Mata.

Aarti is performed five times a day in this temple. During Aarti the view of the temple looks amazing. The first aarti is perfpormed in the morning; second in the noon; third in the evening; fourth in the night and then the bed of Mata is prepared for her sleeping. It is decorated with flowers and other fragrant things. After this the sleeping Aarti is done in which a large number of devotees participate
